D-Light Studios Residency Award 2020/21

About the award:

  • The purpose of this award is to aid the development of a creative practice whilst encouraging constructive engagement with the North East Inner City community
  • This 6 month opportunity is open to practitioners of all art forms: visual artists, designers, writers etc - anyone who needs some dedicated space to create and are interested in sharing their practice with the north east inner city community
  • We are looking for an individual or collective who are interested in incorporating socially engaged activities into their practice and would be excited about the prospect of facilitating some form of creative community engagement during the residency. How exactly is up to you, but an important part of this programme is for the recipient to initiate meaningful interaction with a local community group
  • This engagement could take a variety of forms, a once off workshop, an online series of classes or perhaps your own practice is informed by community outreach and therefore some form of social engagement will take place throughout the duration of your residency
  • Before applying, we ask that you consider a project that can be achieved or significantly developed during your six months working from a dedicated studio space at D-Light Studios

What does the residency offer?

  • A free, dedicated studio space filled with natural light for the duration of the residency (6 months beginning December 2020)
  • During the residency you will have the option to use our large multi-purpose space, Studio A, up to a maximum of 8 days in total - to be scheduled with D-LS management (not to be used for any events)
  • You will receive a €800 materials bursary
  • Mentoring
  • Promotion of your project development via our social media channels and on our website
  • Networking & collaboration opportunities

The Assessment Criteria:

  • Applicants must identify a local group or an aspect of the local community that they aim to approach in order to deliver some form of socially engaged activity during their residency
  • Consider how the residency offerings will directly aid you to complete or significantly develop your project proposal and how the award will benefit your practice as a whole
  • Examples of previous work
  • Experience self-initiating and facilitating workshops or some form of socially engaged activity would be a distinct bonus
  • Feasibility of the proposed project(s) within the timeframe of the residency

The Application Process:

  • Proposals must be submitted via the online form on our website only - emailed applications will not be accepted
  • Proposals will be acknowledged by an automatic message after application is submitted
  • D-Light Studios Management team will review all proposals and supporting materials
  • Shortlisted applications will be contacted via email on the w/c 23rd November 2020
  • Shortlisted applicants may be asked to attend a physical or virtual meeting where D-LS management team can meet you and discuss your proposal in more detail
  • The chosen winner will be contacted via email before December 1st

Who can apply?

  • The purpose of this Residency Award is to facilitate the development of a creative practice whilst fostering constructive engagement with the North East Inner City community
  • This opportunity is open to all creative professionals - artists, designers, writers, dancers, theatre producers etc
  • All applicants must submit a six-month project proposal in addition to a community engagement proposal that they can successfully facilitate during their residency period
  • We are looking for applications that demonstrate clear, achievable goals and a genuine enthusiasm towards the prospect of sharing their creative practice with members of the North East inner city community

More information on the residency studio space:

  • The residency studio is a private space located in Studio A, D-Light Studios.
  • The residency recipient can avail of 24/7 access to their space (not to be used as accommodation)
  • A large window floods the space with natural light
  • The studio has an overhead infrared heater
  • The studio has free WiFi
  • The recipient will have use of the communal kitchen area and free on street parking
  • The residency studio space is located upstairs on the first floor of D-Light Studios. Unfortunately the studio is not wheelchair accessible

About D-Light Studios

  • D-LS is a large, multi-purpose space housed in an almost 200 year old converted warehouse
  • The building itself is located in the heart of Dublin’s North Inner City, in the historic Five Lamps neighbourhood.
  • The D-LS team is dedicated to using the space to facilitate art, culture and community projects whenever possible and this residency award is a central and vital component of our programme.
  • The studio is home to a small number of creative professionals that work from their own studio spaces and offices within the building, head to our Housemates page to learn more about our current members
  • Our large multipurpose spaces Studio A and Studio B are hired on a regular basis by a wide variety of clients including Irish and International brands, production companies, advertising agencies, musicians, theatre productions, photographers and more!
  • We’ve had the pleasure of hosting a number of cultural events such as music gigs, community showcases, exhibitions and more

Terms and Conditions:

  • Applications will close at midnight on Sunday 15th November
  • We will contact shortlisted applicants on the week commencing the 23rd November 2020.
  • COVID-19: The successful applicant must be available to begin the six-month residency from December 2020 and be able to work from the studio. We will of course be following the government Covid-19 staged plan. We can discuss the implications of any potential disruption should it arise.
  • The recipient must agree to to post regular updates about their project development on their social media which we will share across all of D-Light Studios social media platforms
  • This opportunity does not provide accommodation
  • All offers and terms of the residency are subject to change
